Teaching Kids To Be Resilient - Part 2

Do you:

> Want to teach your children to be resilient?

> Worry about how your kids deal with feelings of discomfort, frustration and failure?

> Wonder about what to say and do to help your kids feel better when things don’t turn out as they hoped?

If this sounds familiar, you are in good company with many other parents!

We don’t want our kids to suffer and we want them to bounce back from difficult experiences.

But we’re not always sure how to help.

One mind shift can help.

It’s the idea of “The Adversity Paradox” (borrowed from the title of a wonderful business book):

Setbacks, mistakes and other difficult experiences can be a positive force in our lives if we see the adversity as an ally in our personal growth, and work to learn from it and overcome it.

So the next time your child is upset because they didn’t get the grade they wanted, or make the team, or get a part in the school play, to name just a few examples, here are 3 things you can try.

1) Empathize, validate and talk with your child about their disappointment.

2) Ask what they can learn from this experience and what they can do differently next time to get a better result.

3) Praise their good answers, say you believe in them, and encourage them to keep trying.
